Cass County, Nebraska claims more than 560 square miles between the historic banks of the Platte and Missouri rivers. Cass County, with four other NE counties, is located within the massive Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area, population 820,000. Three counties of this MSA lie within the State of Iowa.
Numerous cities, small towns and villages comprise this pastoral county, the largest of which are Eagle, Louisville, Plattsmouth and Weeping Water. At the time of the 2000 Census, Cass County's population was 24,334.
Plattsmouth, population 6,887, serves as the seat and center of commerce for Cass County. Named in honor of General Lewis Cass, this vibrant region is home to the Naomi Institute, one of NE's earliest facilities for higher learning. Founded in 1870 as a pioneer college, this facility originally called "Rock Bluff School" earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Currently owned by Cass County Historic Society, the building now serves as a museum site.
