Nebraska Dog Bite Statistics

  • Between 1965 and the present, there have been five fatal attacks by dogs in Nebraska, an average of one fatality every eight to nine years.
  • Three different dog breeds have been involved in a fatal attack in Nebraska; no fatal attacks have involved a pit bull-type dog.
  • All five of the Nebraska victims were children.  Children are the age group most frequently bitten by dogs, usually on the face.
  • All the dogs involved in fatal attacks in Nebraska were intact (not spayed or neutered).
  • All five cases involved young children left unsupervised with unfamiliar dogs or children who wandered off and encountered unfamiliar dogs.
  • On average, 2% of the U.S. population is bitten by a dog every year.  Nationwide, 33 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2007.
