Douglas County, Nebraska, established in 1855, was named in honor of Stephen Arnold Douglas, a politician and presidential candidate.  According to Census 2000 data, Douglas County's population of 463,585 ranks it as NE's most populous county.  Home to more than one-fourth of NE's residents, Douglas County lies within the massive Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Located along the mighty Missouri River, Douglas County covers 340 square miles with its numerous cities and towns.  The largest cities include Elkhorn, Omaha and Ralston.  Omaha, population 390,007, is the county seat and center of commerce.  Omaha is also Douglas County's largest city, and the largest city in Nebraska.
