Nebraska Alcohol-Related Traffic Accidents
- In 2007, 34.4% of the fatal vehicle crashes in Nebraska involved alcohol. This represents a slight increase from the 34.1% reported in 2006.
- For comparison, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 41% of fatal crashes nationally involved alcohol in 2006.
- As crash severity increases, so does the likelihood of alcohol involvement. Alcohol was reported in 7.5% of crashes involving injuries, and 4.2% of property damage only crashes.
- In comparison to their contribution to all traffic accidents, drivers aged 21-34 are overrepresented in alcohol related crashes. These drivers are involved in roughly half of all alcohol related crashes.
- Drivers aged 21-24 are the most overrepresented, being involved in 23.1% of alcohol-related crashes but only 11.9% of all crashes.
- Drivers between the ages of 15 and 20, (i.e., below the legal drinking age), are in 17.2% of alcohol-related crashes.
