La Vista, Nebraska

The City of La Vista, located on the eastern Nebraska border with Iowa, is a community in the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area and bordered by the cities of Omaha, Bellevue, Ralston and Papillion. According to the U.S. Census report of 2000, the population was 11,699. The estimated population of La Vista had soared 42 percent by 2008, to 16,643. The median household income was estimated in 2008 to be at $55,838, a few percentage points above the Nebraska state and national averages. The per capita income for the city was $19,612 in 2008. Family is important in La Vista, and over half of the available 4405 housing units are owner-occupied.

After Bellevue and Papillion, La Vista is Sarpy County's third largest city. Incorporated in 1960, it is the newest and fastest growing city in Nebraska. La Vista's neighbor, Papillion, is the county seat. The city of La Vista occupies a land mass of 2.8 square miles and has its population packaged at a density of 4,114 people per square mile.

La Vista is becoming an important player in the business and industrial landscape of Sarpy County. On its western border, La Vista has Interstate 80 as a city line. Recent large scale annexation in that area, for commercial and retail development, has pushed the boundary westward and southerly into flat land bordered on the south by State Highway 370, forming a triangle ripe for new development. The Mayor and City Council of La Vista are committed to strong, orderly, and well planned growth of the annexed areas, and envision a future based on partnerships with its corporate citizens. This commitment, along with a solid infrastructure and La Vista's location, have fueled a progressive plan. La Vista's newest development, Southport, has been planned as an upscale destination with a combination of retail and office park amenities, attracting a Cabela's Superstore as its anchor, followed by an equally impressive array of retail and corporate neighbors. Strategic ingredients of the La Vista growth include its proximity to the Offutt Air Force Base, Eppley Airfield and the Interstate Highway system.

Sarpy County Nebraska, and the City of La Vista, are home to some of the largest employers in the region. Hewlett Packard (HP) Computers, PayPal (an eBay subsidiary), Oriental Trading Co. and CSG, a worldwide business management company, all call La Vista home.

While the majority of the country struggles with an economic downturn, La Vista has seen steady housing sales growth since the first quarter of 2009. Add to that bright spot the fact that property crime in La Vista, on a scale of 1 to 10, has never been more than a one. Compared to the rest of the country, La Vista's cost of living is 10.5 percent lower than the U.S. average, and recent job growth is positive.

La Vista public schools spend $4,944 per student, and there are about 17 students per teacher in La Vista.  If you are doing research for a great place to move with children, it would be easy to see La Vista working its way to the top of your list.  The children of La Vista are served by the Papillion-La Vista School District. The city has four elementary schools, one junior high and one senior high school, the Papillion-La Vista High School. Administrators, teachers, and staff in the Papillion-La Vista district are committed to making a difference in the students' lives, and dedicated to nurturing and challenging each student to achieve his or her potential.  La Vista school students continually score above the nationwide average in standardized testing. They also excel in sports, athletics and other extra-curricular activities. Thirty one Preschools (pre-k) and 27 private schools supplement the high quality of La Vista education. The high school graduation or completion rate for the City of La Vista is 89.3 percent. Of those high school graduates, more than half go on to earn a college degree.

While there are no hospitals within the La Vista city limits, the population is well served by the New New Bellevue Medical Center. The new facility is located at Hideaway 370 and 25th Street in Bellevue, Nebraska. It is complemented by two sister locations, the Clarkson West Medical Center in West Omaha and the Nebraska Medical Center.  The Nebraska Medical Center's main campus at 42nd and Dewey includes the Clarkson Hospital and University Hospital buildings, Lied Transplant Center, and is adjacent to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
