Papillion, Nebraska is the NE's 9th largest city and the county seat of Sarpy County. Papillion is predominantly a suburb of the City of Omaha, Papillion’s 4.2 square miles is surrounded by the cities of La VistaBellevueSpringfield, and Chalco. Papillion is called by the nickname Papio by area residents and the nickname is used in a few business names as well. U.S. Census Bureau data shows Papillion with a current estimated population of 23,739.

Papillion was ranked number three in CNNMoney.com’s top 100 places to live in America, based on the best combination of economic opportunity, good schools, safe streets, and a vast amount of parkland. CNN has said that “for a town to rack up great scores in both economic performance and housing affordability is quite rare.” Papillion's unemployment rate has always been half or less than the national average, and the area enjoys a half dozen major employers that have continued hiring even in a slow economy. Corporate residents Alegent Health and InfoUSA are actually in Papillion city limits while Mutual of OmahaAmeritrade, Union Pacific Railroad, and Con Agra are nearby neighbors.

Investment in the future is the buzzword of the current administration in Papillion, NE. The city has already devoted $750,000 of a multi-year revitalization project in the downtown historic section that will bring new sidewalks and modern efficient lighting in antique Parisian-style fixtures. This unique style is important in maintaining Papillion as one of the few remaining Midwest frontier towns that has kept its 18th century Parisian inspired architecture intact.

The Sumter Amphitheater opened last year to rave reviews. Sumpter is a $1.5 million performing arts center that hosts free concerts, wine tasting events, and the occasional movie. It has permanent seating for 350 and open grass lawn seating for another 1,000. A new AAA baseball stadium is planned, with construction starting in 2011. Papillion, Nebraska is proud to have top quality health care right at its front door. The Midlands Hospital, part of Alegent Health, has been a good neighbor for over 33 years.

Papillion, NE shares a number of elements with La Vista due to their proximity, and the Papillion-La Vista High School (also called the North or Old School) and the Papillion-La Vista South High School is one of those joint efforts. Partnering for an improved educational experience started with the K-12 grades of the Papillion-La Vista School District. The Saint Columbkille Catholic School is located on East 5th Street in Papillion. It handles Catholic education from 1st through 8th grades in Papillion. The Saint Columbkille Parish oversees eight Catholic High Schools throughout Sarpy County -- three coed, three for girls only, and two for boys, one of which is Creighton Prep that provides holistic formation and college preparatory education to young men.

Most of Papillion’s recreational activities take place in or next to Halleck Park in the heart of the city. Halleck Park has many trails, trees, and peaceful green space to enjoy. Inside the park you’ll find tennis courts, volleyball courts, playgrounds, "The Duck Pond," Monarch Field (a/k/a "The Pit"), and E.A. Fricke Field. There are also nine baseball diamonds within the park, with an extensive and a well organized Little League Baseball, and a men’s softball league. Adjacent to the park is the Papio Bay Aquatic Center that includes two water slides and a pool. Papio Fun Park adds amusement park activities for the young and young at heart.
