The 2000 U.S. Census shows Seward with a population of 6,319 people (1,494 families). Residents of Seward occupy 3.3 square miles of landlocked area in an almost perfect square.

Seward, NE is known for its Fourth of July Celebration. What is unique to the annual celebration in Seward is that the event is run and coordinated by the area's high school students. The celebration has been growing steadily with new events added each year, attracting 40,000 attendees in recent years and garnering nationwide news coverage.

Public Education in Seward is done through a citywide district that administers the Seward Elementary SchoolSeward Middle School and Seward High School. A Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod provides Lutheran education at St. John's Lutheran Elementary and junior high schools, while Concordia University is a private college with Lutheran roots.
